De correlatie tussen x en y is 0.6251. Er bestaat een variable z die we niet onderzoeken maar wel een invloed heeft op x en y. We gaan met de partiale correlatie r(xy,z) het verband zoeken tussen x en y waarbij we de invloed van z wegwerken. Hier wordt de correlatie tussen x en y dan 0.9957.
