Bij de afhankelijke variabele word een vaste waarde genomen, waardoor de invloed van die waarde geëlimineerd wordt. De grote verschillen tussen de correlaties met en zonder afhankelijke variabele duiden op een vrij grote invloed van deze 3de variabele.

r(xy,z)de 3e dimensie (z) wordt weggelaten. Het effect van z wordt dus weggewerkt en daarna wordt de correlatie tussen x en y berekend. De invloed van z is 0.37.We kunnen niet zeggen of er nu een sterke/zwakke invloed is.
