De partiele correlatie tussen 3 variabelen wordt hier onderzocht. Bij deze techniek ga je zien of een derde variabele, namelijk Z, een invloed uitoefent op de relatie van de eerste 2 variabelen, namelijk X en Y. Als er tussen X en Y een sterke relatie bestaat en de partiele correlatie tussen X,Y en Z is veel kleiner, dan kan je stellen dat de variabele Z invloed uitoefent op de relatie tussen X en Y. Als de correlatie onveranderd is gebleven, kunnen we stellen dat Z weinig tot geen invloed uitoefent op de andere 2 variabelen.
