De conclusie van de student is hier niet correct. Ten eerste hebben outliers een groot effect op de gegevens (Het is trouwens om dat effect van die outliers te reduceren, dat we bij de volgende vraag een logaritme gaan invoegen). Ten tweede is de mediaan duidelijk niet de beste schatter.
Op het eerste zicht lijkt de midrange de beste schatter door de kleine variantie tussen bovengrens en ondergrens. Door de extreme outliers kan het extreem fout gaan als een van de gegevens buiten deze grenzen valt. Om het probleem van die outliers dus te gaan verminderen, kunnen we veronderstellen dat het gemiddelde de beste schatter is. De variatie is wel wat groter maar de outliers zijn in grote mate verdwenen.

De conclusie is louter een kwestie van afweging en is dus verschillend van persoon tot persoon.
